Unplug for a while to connect….

When I was in college in the 90’s, we were asked as part of a lesson to go out and hug a tree! What a strange request I thought! I didn’t really understand the point of it. However, with the passage of time and with the ups and downs of life experience, I may have got the message!

I think the lesson was about ………..connection.

A walk in nature, especially around trees is a powerful and healing thing to do. Why trees you may ask? Well, we know how trees are vital and good for us in terms of the air we breath and the environment, not to mind their beauty! But for me, I’m also impressed by the way in which trees are grounded by their roots and how they are interconnected. They have taken, for the most part, a firm hold on the earth over time. It helps them withstand all kinds of weather and remain grounded. I can see now how hugging a tree connects me to this grounding strength and to something greater than me!

I have recently learned that there is actually scientific evidence behind this feeling of connection and nature! Scientists have discovered that being in nature enhances our wellbeing, even our immunity and our sense of belonging to the world around us.

However, I must admit, I don’t generally hug trees and I haven’t always been a fan of the great outdoors but as time goes by I appreciate the healing benefits of being in nature. I now especially love the autumn months.

The majesty and colour of the trees,

the rustle of the leaves beneath my feet,

the birds song

the sound of trickling water

These all inspire a sense of connection and gratitude which lifts my spirit. Nature is the masterpiece and reminds me that I’m not alone and that I am part of something bigger. My ego is put in check and I begin to appreciate the interconnectedness and interdependence of everything. It inspires awe in me, which apparently scientists also say contributes to wellbeing!

I have always been curious about connection and that is one of the reasons I created Jigsee. The messages in Jigsee and the thoughts on the bookmarks are all inspired by this desire to connect. I think to unplug for a while, however we chose to, helps us all to connect more deeply!
